Competency 6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Volunteer Work

Miss Carly’s

Two years ago, I spent a winter volunteering at Miss Carly’s in Rockford, IL, where I had the opportunity to build relationships with people facing addiction and homelessness. I made and served sack lunches, distributed donations like blankets and clothing, and, most importantly, listened. This experience reinforced the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect and meeting people where they are. It also ignited my passion for working with marginalized communities.

Competency 6 in social work focuses on engagement, and my time at Miss Carly’s strengthened my ability to connect with individuals in a meaningful way. I learned how vital active listening and empathy are when working with vulnerable populations. It also pushed me to reflect on my own biases and approach every interaction with cultural humility.
